Kira Gray- A Poem

If Only (my grandpa Peter)

I didn't need to go to the mines
there was work enough
but she was just a girl
didn't speak the language
didn't want to move
live with foreigners
We hit a pocket
up she went
Boom!
timber crushed my chest
the men got me out on Christmas Eve
didn't let me die down there
I lived an hour
hard to dig a grave
this time of year
If only she had listened!

Kira Gray, neophyte poet and world traveler who writes to tell the stories of voiceless people everywhere, living or deceased.
