Stefanie Bennett- Two Poems

RITUAL

In the crook of the season
A lone dragonfly
Hurtles headfirst
Into the man-made lake.

From the bank I watch
The suicide. How to
Interpret an insect thought?
How echo it back?

This amphitheatre’s foreboding enough.
Humans rush to
A stop-watching dynasty with
Gyroscope transplanted hearts.

It won’t do. Stretch! Strike out!
... Becoming the kamikaze
Stream of consciousness
Means so much

Less of you... claims
The otherness
Of others. Is that
What we’re resurged for?

The sigh that rises
                             From
The lily-pad has
A diabolical lilt:
It’s over.

I trudge benignly homeward:
Mourn the large life,
The small death
Of it all –.

WINTER’S GARDEN

Don’t talk to me
About
The beginning
Of the end.
Since then,
The face
I wasn’t
Born with
Defies
