Donal Mahoney- Three Poems

Library Card

Emily went to the library
to sign up for a library card

so she could take out books
and use the free computers

but the clerk ask for identification
and Emily didn’t have any

so the clerk suggested she
sign up to vote instead.

Running for President

Greed is good
said Gordon Gekko
but greed is God

to some who
have more money
than one can count

and must hire
others to count it.
But in America one

can seek power
to feed one's greed
because no one has

too much power
even if one has
too much money

until the day
the hearse pulls up
and takes the flesh away.

The Election in America 2016

Paul fell asleep early
after a hard day's work
earning a pittance.

His wife woke him up
and said he’d been hollering,
asked if he'd had a nightmare.

She told him he'd never before
hollered like that in his sleep.
Paul told her he’d been dreaming

about the presidential debates in 2016.
Behind the microphones he saw
Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.

Americans have a choice, Paul said.
Listen to Bernie and The Donald in 2016.
Or buy a nice tent in Syria instead.

Donal Mahoney lives in St. Louis, Missouri.
