Paul David Adkins- A Poem

She decided she looked crazy
talking to herself.
She bought a cell phone from a pawnshop,
skipped the service plan.
When she heard a voice
she flipped the screen.
She looked like any kid in the mall
with one hand waving and swinging,
the other pressed to her ear.
When finished
she snapped it closed.
She tucked it in her bag,
that phone
with its cracked screen and old battery,
key pad numbers dull
as the ommatidia
of a dead fly’s eye.

Bio follows:  Raised in South Florida, Paul David Adkins now lives in New York.
