J.D. DeHart- Two Poems

Fire Birds
Together, they assault
the air
then fall into ashen bits
only to find themselves
blinking to life again,
soaring with heat.
If the heart wants to
live, it lives on; if it lies
peaceful in slumber,
it rests in the pebbles.
Slithering is her natural
state, although you may
not recognize that truth
immediately on meeting.
Pay close attention to
the flicking tongue when
she talks and you will
notice her cold-blooded
venomous nature.
JD DeHart is a writer and teacher.  His chapbook, The Truth About Snails, is currently available from RedDashboard.
