Jennifer Lagier- Poem & Photo

X Marks the Spot

Purple Pride of Madeira
and golden Scotch Broom
circle stumps of dead pine.
Flowering wild radish bracket
desiccated hemlock remains.
Glowing nasturtium embers
seethe within swampy shadows.

As we climb Hatton Canyon,
moist trail transforms
to gurgling stream.
Clotted foam clings
to bent pampas grass plumes.
Run-off from last week’s rain
converts path to waterfall,
reveals hidden bedrock.

Harbinger blackbirds
jeer our soggy retreat,
broadcast avian gossip.
Con trails, shredded shore fog
mark this sacred spot
with a giant cross overhead.
