David Ross- A Poem

"Don't Tread On Us"

My rectangular back yard
is full of basking reptiles
who have innate ESP
since they scatter pell-mell
at approaching silent steps
long before I come close
or maybe it's the shadow
I cast on cloudless days
that only garters can sense
till perception went amiss
the day I mowed the lawn
and sliced a dozing snake
into widespread fractions
like Oval Office candidates
do to the country they love.

  1. Thoughtful writing reminding me of those snakes in the grass, the Chicago Cubbies.
