REPORT FROM THE FRONT
I see them everywhere sometimes
Casualties of the war between man and himself
That has raged so long its cause is forgotten
Its weapons becoming ever more refined
A preacher whose faith has gone out of fashion
Muttering sermons in an abandoned church
An artist depicting a loved one’s portrait
Invisible to those who prefer its blank space
A teacher who’s fired for telling the truth
About the crimes of humanity he’s told to ignore
A scientist discovering a cure for death
His colleagues will steal and sell to the rich
And when night falls I watch them fade
Into the shadows till they disappear
Like soldiers beating a final retreat
Their voices lost in the withering wind
