CANDLES IN THE DARK
I have known cab drivers
Working twelve hour shifts
Who dreamed of becoming rock stars
And I have known dishwashers
Scraping plates of half-eaten food
Who yearned to be prize-winning poets
And I have known janitors
Emptying overflowing trash cans
Who longed to be famous artists
But they all remained servants
As the brief light from their windows
Surrendered to the supremacy of the night
I have known cab drivers
Working twelve hour shifts
Who dreamed of becoming rock stars
And I have known dishwashers
Scraping plates of half-eaten food
Who yearned to be prize-winning poets
And I have known janitors
Emptying overflowing trash cans
Who longed to be famous artists
But they all remained servants
As the brief light from their windows
Surrendered to the supremacy of the night
