Paul Tristram- Three Poems

Happy St David’s Day, Mun!

Feel the pride rise up into your heart,
that’s Welsh Red Dragon’s blood
pumping and soaring through your veins.
Mountains and beautiful waterfall Valleys
they're alive within your Celtic, artistic soul.
Celebrate this special yearly day
with leek, daffodil, beer and your kin.
Giving a nod backwards as you go
to your Forefathers and National History
still smiling from behind a veil within the Vale.
For today is the day of the Welsh People,
the land of Cymru, Castles and Choir.
Walk tall, sing loudly and sing proudly
for in our hilly streets it’s St David all the way!

Drinking Like A Suicide

“…and that’s what he was doing when I found him.”

“So, what do you see in him?”

“Underneath all of that anger and madness
is a really nice, caring man. He’s got a heart of gold.”

“But how do you put up with the rages?”

“Oh, that’s easy…he’s not angry with me!”

Careful How You Go

Careful how you go out there
whilst wandering through the day.
Look wisely at intentions
before you have your say.
Peer through the masks and disguises
which nearly everybody wears.
Protect yourself with avoidance and intuition.
Trust no one a second time.
Do not let them use your honour,
sympathy or sense of fair play against you,
it is yours to bestow where you see fit,
not to be demanded as chess-moves
by those without any of their own.
Be wary of anyone who thinks
that they are better or less than you.
Do not apologise or explain
for simply being yourself?
You know when you are wrong,
you do not need smug people pointing it out.
We all make mistakes,
let only genuine loved-ones have a say in yours.
If you refuse to get emotionally and mentally
involved with bullies and aggressors
then you have already won half the battle.
