Paul Tristram- Three Poems

For You I’d Grow A Beard

To hide all of your kisses in,
furnish the straight jaw that you married
and nest the baby smiles
you’ve hatched within me.

Stepping Lightly Through This Heavy Situation

Don’t get involved with the gossiping tittle-tattlers.
Getting their amusement by slandering other peoples names.
None of us are Saints! We are all flawed human beings
trying to make it safe and unscarred through to bedtime.
Be careful of gangs, clic’s and mob (cattle) mentality
and the cruel cancer and poison of the envy and meanness
which dwells there (Witch burning is still alive and well!)
Don’t ponder their accusations or take to heart spitefulness.
Disconnect enthusiastically and quickly from any negativity
that’s trying to drag you down and hold you back, today.
When malignant people stand blocking your path through life
don’t barge through them or fight them, instead step around them.
Let your only competition be bettering yourself not other people.

Teaspoon

“So, what happened last night exactly, I heard Maisie’s quit?”

“Well, she was doing the 3am walk around Ward B with a torch.
Everything’s fine until she approaches Mrs. Hoskins bed
and the light shines on something bright she was holding
in her hands which were clasped on top of the bedclothes
in front of her, almost as if she was in prayer or something.
After a second or two she realizes that it’s a teaspoon,
(She must have stole in from the staffroom that afternoon
during that fire alarm false alarm?) so as Maisie leans in closer
to pry free the teaspoon she notices that something’s wrong
with Mrs. Hoskins face, but it takes her a moment to figure it out.
Both of her eyeballs were completely out of their sockets
and just sitting there on her cheekbones as she just lay there
breathing all contentedly with a half smile upon her face.
Well, it finished Maisie off, she said that she can handle
all the rough stuff, the violence and the screaming but this shit
takes the biscuit, she’ll be having nightmares about it forever!”
