SOLITARY CONFINEMENT
I see them more and more these days
People walking the streets alone
While talking out loud to themselves
Like children with imaginary friends
To keep them company when they feel
That they’re all alone in the world
Sometimes it seems like they talk
To someone who died or left them
Without ever saying goodbye
Or someone they believe owes them
For loaning them something valuable
That they never bothered to return
And sometimes it’s a total stranger
Who suddenly appeared one day
Just to have someone to talk to
Who would listen and understand
How in life the only one
You really can trust is yourself
