HIDDEN PERSUADERS
One day he began
To hear disembodied voices
Wherever he went
In the self-service line
At the local supermarket
Scolding him for mistakes
On buses announcing
An approaching stop
So he wouldn’t lose his way
Over the telephone
To guide him so that
He’d make the right choice
And as time wore on
He began to depend
On these strict commands
Like a child who has to
Be told what to do
Or suffer the consequences
