Paul Tristram- Three Poems

Smoking Swisher Sweets

As I look up at the darkening sky
of this Northern California evening.
I take another pull
of the Blueberry Swisher Sweet
that I have in my mouth
and gently weave my thoughts
into the rings of exhaled smoke.
I feel warm and at peace
with the world, at last.
Dinner is almost ready
and the 3rd bottle of Samuel Adams
is going down lovely.
I think back upon the road
that has led me here
and shake my head softly, with a smile.
Who’d have thought, who could have known?
Not me Sir, No, not even a clue.
Sometimes a curveball in life
merely gives you a platform
to ricochet magnificently off.
You see a chance and grab it by the throat,
then ride it for all that it’s worth.
The mountains of this strange life
that I once fought and scaled by fingertips alone
are now finally beginning to level out
into lush, green pastures before me.
Amazing, absolutely and positively amazing.

The Wheel Of Misfortune

Downwards it grinds
the bones of your soul
into sharp splinters.
Hopes foundations
slowly into choking dust.
With no good luck left
to slake the thirst
of an uncrowned fool.
Tipped upside down
from Summer
into Winter’s dark gutter
with Autumn’s burning hands
helping with the throw.
Misfortune does feel
just as real as You!
As your age or your name.
Your shadow companion,
a shouldered burden,
a constant
throughout all of time.
Yet, it is merely part and parcel
of life’s strange cycle.
For the wheel edge grinding down
is already upon the right course
to be travelling back on up to the top.

Bourbon Skies

His boots tread knowingly
the uneven cobblestones
of this small market town
like crooked teeth
in a decadent face of yesterday.
He twists right, as always
through the shadowed tunnel of cobwebs,
then around the side of the bronze
World War Memorial gates of Honour.
Up the brown, red and orange
Autumnal Sycamore pathway
giving a quick nod to the tree on the right
where his school friend hung himself.
Past the 2nd Pond and always upwards,
the magnificent Cascades, waterfall steps
to the Reservoir and Ivy Tower.
Then 30 minutes more of snaking
the moss clinging loose stone walls
of this Vale of Neath country lane
until finally you stride the Canyons at Valleys top.
Where, with Welsh magic mushroom juice
swirling in impossible currents and directions
in his belly and pumping and punching
fists of colour into his senses and brain,
temporarily dislodging and shifting
his soul from its framework.
He feels the pressure of the brewing storm
above his crazy, melting head
snapping like ember sticks
and dusty old dead Grandmother bones.
He pisses into the vivid green grass
a shuddering gushing of himself
smelling distinctly of leaves and earth,
rainbows, slugs and wet fungi.
Then with arms raised in victory
excitement and the thrill of living experience
he screams out the Barbarian
from deep within his soul.
Upwards and outwards
into the magical evenings
Bourbon Skies.

Donal Mahoney- Two Poems

Over and Out

Harley turned 70
the other day
and died

riding his motorcycle
through a pink dawn,
an old Suzuki

not a Harley.
He hit a fireplug
and soared,

a missile shot
over the handlebars.
He never made a sound

landed in
rose garden
but never knew it.

Heart attack
while airborne,
never felt the thorns.

After the Fact

A minister's son married
a deacon's daughter
after a long courtship.

It was difficult at times
doing everything right
but the young couple

saved themselves
for the wedding night
when the groom

sat on the bed
and watched his bride
carefully undress,

finally removing
the bra he never
knew was padded.

James Mirarchi- A Poem

MONKEYS
Sam Scun jettisoned friendships
Like carcass bones
Generally
He would shoot them with a slingshot
Into the sentimental bonfire of the past

Some specific friendships
He would stuff down
His sink’s garbage disposable
Jamming them in
With the handle of a wooden spoon
While they were being ground up
And making the most horrible sound
He would blithely listen to his iPod
A leftover tendril would momentarily
Slither out of the drain
But Sam Scun would
Stomp on it with his foot
Like it was some vexing snake

Some other friendships
He would flush down his toilet
Eventually stopping it up
With their feisty spirits
Sam Scun had to use a plunger
To unclog them from the pipes
Sometimes
He would even find
A mirage of his friends’ faces
Angrily floating in the toilet water

One day
A conscience suddenly rose
Over Sam Scun’s horizon
And he became severely sunburned
By the light of guilt

An entitled douche bag
Who projected himself onto the world
Who scapegoated and blackmailed his friends
Sam Scun now did a 180
Turning his bedroom into a purgatory cell

He installed a huge cage in the corner
Filled with jilted friendships
In the form of red feral monkeys

He invited them to torment him
With their screaming and cage-rattling
Before going to bed
He even left a key to his dreams with them

Every night
With this key
The monkeys would burst from their bars
And quarter Sam Scun on his bed
One juggled with his body parts
Another jump roped with his intestines
Another played catch with his head
And yet another drew a hopscotch board with his blood

Each morning
Sam Scun would wake feeling cleansed
It was not long
Before he felt completely scoured of his sins

The monkeys were no longer required
So he replaced them with a pet kitten
And started treating
All his new friends much better

Douglas Polk- Two Poems

Berlin

the wall gone,
but the shadows still remain,
the voices silenced,
only specters from the past,
unheard,
and unseen,
yet felt in the souls,
of a people now free,
the wall gone,
but the shadows still remain.

The Spoken Word

words spoken behind closed doors,
recorded and broadcast worldwide,
for everyone to hear,
for everyone to see,
today it is everyone's business what the individual says,
or thinks,
terrorists,
and racists,
exist behind closed doors,
while fascists run rampant,
and rule the day.

Pijush Kanti Deb- A Poem

Alternative Healing Of Heart

The long-term illness of my wife
pours instantly a course of cursed ink
on my painting-
painted efficiently and magnificently
with colourful paints-
imported from my dreamland,
compels my three entities-
body, mind and soul to sink down to
the depth of bottomless ocean of fire
and snatches the fire-extinguisher too,
used in extinguishing my burning heart-
set ablaze by the evil attitudes of
society, profession, politics and religion.
Alas! The burning heart is helpless
and driven blindly towards the heaps of ashes
with no escaping reverse gear.
Nevertheless, my strong will-power is bestowed
with a green signal
and I find myself submerged in the heap of
pen and papers
and blissful somehow in writing something new
about my old misfortune,
and my injured heart gets healed alternatively
by fucking white papers with colourful pens.

Melanie Browne- Three Poems

Hypnosis Tapes are for Pussies

Stressed out, 9 pm
I am listening to
a Hypnosis app
through my headphones,
the lady is talking in quiet
tones, and mentions a
feather that is apparently
somewhere in the room
taking away all my anxieties
or the desire to eat or the
desire  to smoke or whatever
floats your boat,
through one ear I hear
her sweet and gentle voice,
and through the other ear
I hear a man saying words,
words I can’t quite make out,
I try not to worry but he could
be saying anything,
telling me to sell all
my worldly belongings
and move to Antarctica
or preach to the wolves in Angola,
I try to relax,
but my feather doesn't
glide through the air,
it doesn't flitter,
it starts to stab me
in the eye over and
over again blinding me,
and the blood gets all over
my pillow,I try to throw my
headphones across the room
in a rage, but I shatter into
a million pieces and get
carried away by the wind

Adjust Hue After Pushing Mute

after watching an
episode of Mad Men,
I find I am suddenly
holding an old vintage
remote in my hand,
and am wearing a
fringed leather skirt
with a pair of brown boots,
"Adjust hue after pushing mute"
I read out loud to the ghosts
that lay in sleeping bags
around this suddenly cold room,
I uncork the wine,
and press the big button
and it swirls green, then pink
then blue and the room
starts to change colors also,
as the ghosts start to waken
and join me on the couch,
rubbing sleepy eyes and
saying, "that's pretty groovy."

All Celebrities Went to the Desert to Find Themselves (headline borrowed from the wire)

Many celebrities were in the desert. Many celebrities danced and consumed alcoholic beverages. Many celebrities were wearing fashionable articles of clothing and were photographed laughing. Some celebrities went to the desert to worship pagan deities. There was a giant bubbling cauldron in the desert and the celebrities were putting things in it. Expensive things, like blue cheese and pear tartlettes and fancy drinks made with pineapple, imported caviar,a brand new Mercedes, their personal assistants, several members of the paparazzi, and Gwyneth Paltrow. This bubbling brew was starting to build strength. The celebrities took a giant spoon to taste their concoction, and honestly it wasn't bad. It just needed more salt. They each drank giant bowlfuls and it sustained them and gave them awesome powers, powers to pick really interesting Indie movie roles. It gave their skin an awesome glow and they basked in themselves and each other until the sun shined over their glimmering bodies and they fell fast asleep.

Linda M. Crate- Two Poems

of yesteryear

i remember we used to
traverse the
wood together when
the pines
were still buried beneath a
hundred years of snow,
and the roots
of happiness and romance together
seemed a reality that would
always glimmer in the
heartbeat of
a summer's sun;
but now i walk alone

i tell myself it's better this way
that you cut me with all
your thorns and thistles, but though
my heart and body have healed my mind will
sometimes linger on you
haunting me in
memories of blue skies and paw prints;
i've always fallen in love with wolves
and coyotes, they always
tear my heart in two
you think my heart would learn it's lesson,
but it can't help whom it falls in love with

now i walk this wood
with the faeries, druids, and the kind wolves
promises of tomorrow glittering in
their step,
and i take a bite of pomegranate
melancholy to wash
the bitterness of you away
so that i can wake in the morning refreshed and renewed
erased of the stain that was you.

hybrid

my mind was always an imaginative place
so maybe i just imagined
that you cared
or that you said you loved me,
but it felt so real
i thought that it would be forever true;
gave you all of me
so that you could give me none of you
we traveled to the woods where
you would have buried
my heart
in the ice of your indifference and scorn,
but i broke my wings free of your
cage for i am summer born
my flames of passion never die
i would not be another blue lipped angel
buried in your ice,
and so i walk the forest alone these
days with the counsel of the
birds and the bees
the flowers and the trees
with fae and wolves to accompany me
because not every wolf is bad
just as not every dragon is good,
and you were a bit of both.

Denny E. Marshall- Three Poems

Falling Thru Fabric

Wishing on a falling star
Wishing it did not completely fall
The voyage ends in an unseen unknown
The unmarked roads and journeys of us all
The space-time fabric twist in song
Notes speaking in a silent call
Gravity figures dance like warp motion
Distance guarded by a great atom wall

The Right Size

When stepping down on that bug.
Did you think his wife would miss him?
Perhaps the children affected.
Was the subject to small to matter?
Or just to small, to have feelings.
Desiring life, what size does that start at?
What height is needed to reach a dream?
Do insect threat small forms in their eyes.
The way we have since rising from the dust
Or does mixing among dirt and mud.
Bring a bonding of a certain kinship.

Music Of Nature’s Wings

Hear the sounds and music of nature’s wings
Birds calling from the branches and the sky
A classical song of hidden starlings
The knock of a woodpeckers as they try

Sparrows in a willow the chorus sings
The hummingbirds buzz as flowers they pry
The orchestra plays on, the chamber rings
Birds calling from the branches and the sky

Onward they soar, despite what weather brings
Notes of a migrating flock passing by
High in the clouds screeches of eagles cry.
Majestic hawks join and predator kings
Hear the sounds and music of nature’s wings

Richard Schnap- A Poem

CANDLES IN THE DARK

I have known cab drivers
Working twelve hour shifts
Who dreamed of becoming rock stars

And I have known dishwashers
Scraping plates of half-eaten food
Who yearned to be prize-winning poets

And I have known janitors
Emptying overflowing trash cans
Who longed to be famous artists

But they all remained servants
As the brief light from their windows
Surrendered to the supremacy of the night
