Heather Gelb- A Poem

Between the Horse's Ears

Like a white stone statue
The horse stood against a backdrop of
A boiling sky, an inedible soup spilling
Deep red over the clouds.
I listened to the sounds of silence
Blaring between the horse's ears,
Daring me to interfere with the
Orchestra of echoes rising like
Soundless vapor from the ground.
I heard endless cycles of chanting
where are you where are you where are you where are you
Through every pore of my skin.
And still the horse stood like granite, even as the
Sky dripped red onto his back, sticking to his thick mane.
I open my mouth into a soundless howl, falling forward,
Finally recognizing the dream when my hands
Passed through his white form as if he were just
Another speckled cloud in the sky.

Wide awake, I run outside beneath a blooming sky
Streaked with melted flower petals.
A bone white cloud passes in front of the sun.
I feel feathery as I soar towards the hunk of stone
Planted in the open field.
Looking closer,
I see the stone switch its tail. Suddenly a
Head pops up,
Chewed grass hanging in jaw,
Ears rotate and
I hug the solid form of the horse as my skin soaks up the thought that
I am home.

I hear the sounds of a new day
Cascading between the horse's ears.

Brief Bio: I often feel like a gazelle as I leap from hilltop to hilltop.
On one of these hills I recently published my memoir, my spiritual
journey from the hills of one land to another:
