Concours d’Arrogance
“The annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance gathers the world's wealthiest
collectors and most-prized cars.” --- Bloomberg
Maseratis, Aston Martins, Bugattis clog village streets.
Private jets create gridlock at the airport.
Billionaires and their groupies occupy
every expensive
restaurant and fine bar in town.
Jags and Ferraris drag
race down Ocean Avenue,
playboys in costly
toys till 1 a.m.
All week they offend
store clerks, toss cigarette butts
onto the sidewalk, expect special treatment, disobey
rules.
We are neighbors annoyed by their noisy parties,
arrogant comments,
inflated expectations,
illegal beach campfires, piles of empty wine bottles,
torn baguettes, shattered
glass, wasted fromage.
Once a year, they invade our quiet peninsula,
toss around thousands of dollars, snub the locals,
dazzle the Chamber of Commerce with a glut
of lavish consumption, a
turbo injection of cash.
