B.Z. Niditch- Three Poems

LAST GIG

Smooth jazz playing
from now shut mouth organs
at a natural good night
for my last gig
buried over quarter notes
drowning in pockets of sax
bellowing over the townhouse
asked to play at a birthday party
by a warm bombed out menu
warmed by wood stoves
in a November midnight hour
watching a bird through windows
chirping under trembling oaks
in the soft showery rain
the whole length of hours
remembering French onion soup
and vanilla pancakes
on the fire near the floorboards
to watch dancing and propose
a toast that persuades you
that the thirst and hunger
of our menu wheelhouse
is perfectly arranged
yet a woman argues
that she does not want
to be a year older
and throws her drink away.

WALDEN POND TRAILS

On the Concord river
we sail my kayak in denims
by a swarming nest of hornets
over us by a fawn
rustling by trees
we're spreading lines
of Thoreau
at my students orientation
wishing to hold hands
of love and language
in our nature
by first circles of light
with a glow in companions
who tell me of their troubled
romances in their essays
breathing hard on a marathon
from grassy hills and dunes
under dry orange leaves
as new Fall acorns drop
we run into shadowy strides
as a horse back rider waves
to us down hills of open songs
over Walden Pond trails
by breezy gestures of the wind.

FROM MY HARBOR BOAT

Early at my untied rope
from my anchor on my boat
lent to me by woodcutters
from the Azores
who enjoy singing
amid a rainy dampness
searching for blue fish
oysters or salmon
passing the heavy dunes
and sleeping rocks
in a sunlight landscape
on ports of call
by sea voiced shore birds
in a chorus by pine trees
chirping on boundless Oak
touching greensward woods
as acorns fall over green hills
crawling by white sands
my sax sings by the waters
off the Cape hidden by leaves
birds take off for the South
in an unusual consuming sun
at a November's noonday
with a Marathon companion
as a few deers run by us
in a flash of first light
of red and orange dry leaves
not forgotten by time
a first woodland love
by wandering days
over my album leafs
page of my poems
a woman in red heels
as a muted muse
speaks to me of her lost love
having poisoned her life
waits by hedges of vines
by yellow hyacinth groves
I'm in a Fall blue blazer
with apple scents
in faint trills from my sax
playing in my backyard
along wind swept trees
along the home harbor Bay
by dangling shadows
of now ripened raspberries
walking my sheep dog
in the rain.

Robert Lavett Smith- Three Poems

Raised in New Jersey, Robert Lavett Smith has lived since 1987 in San Francisco, where for the past sixteen years he has worked as a Special Education Paraprofessional. He has studied with Charles Simic and the late Galway Kinnell. He is the author of several chapbooks and three full-length poetry collections, the most recent of which is The Widower Considers Candles (Full Court Press, 2014). He has recently been working on an new collection of sonnets—his second foray into the form—which is entitled Sturgeon Moon, and which will hopefully be published by Full Court Press sometime early next year.

ECHOES OF ANCIENT MUSIC

i.m.: Galway Kinnell, 1927-2014

Your voice was resonant and gently wise,
More penetrating than perhaps we knew.
A passion for the craft preceded you:
So did the patient kindness in your eyes.
As starlings, when they catch an updraft, rise,
Whispering wing beats lifted into blue,
Something you often told our class rings true,
Hoisting my hurt heart upward to clear skies.
You said that we write poetry because
We hear an ancient music in its lines,
That otherwise we’d all be writing prose.
Our scansion betrays raggedness at times
Whose implications only the blood knows;
You offered us a taste of the sublime.

CHRISTMAS MUSIC

Not yet Thanksgiving, and the Internet
Begins to spew the carols we remember:
Songs I can never hear without regret,
Since my wife passed away in late December.
This festive season tends to disinter
Emotions I’d prefer discretely buried;
I really do grieve differently in summer,
When solstice light brings solace that I need.
Those twining serpents, loneliness and greed,
Lie coiled in every Christmas ornament,
Hatching as days grow shorter—and they breed
A vague malaise approaching discontent.
Whatever madness dashes through the snow,
I learned to do without it long ago.

A SORT OF MAD SALVATION

A Coptic icon somehow come to life,
He strides the sparsely planted median,
His wooden cross thrust forward like a knife—
A minor codicil in God’s Grand Plan.
I guess you’ve got to hand it to the man;
His shouted words and weird gesticulation,
Outroaring passing bus or minivan,
Prove more than equal to the situation.
The tangled beard is part of the equation,
As is the long black cassock that he wears;
It seems as though a sort of mad salvation
Has caught the drowsy traffic unawares.
And the declining sun seems poised to hold
His fervor on a field of beaten gold.

poem 1:

Disheveled Boats

Tonight the wind tangles the waves
making sounds like distant chants

breaker after breaker gone wild

The current is a jealous lover
that pulls us apart, together, apart,
a net of salt, in, out, gasping, floating

She says:  To float is divine

Our bodies, disheveled boats moored
against a dune
A sky of gulls roving, roving
Restless watchers

We fuck in the dunes
and sink into sultry bodies
Her black hair, as if night spilled
an apparition
A cantilever of darkness balances
the ornate moon

We are fire and sea, undulant
floating driftwood, lyrical,
something of a hymn
Dune grass rises between our thighs

She curls beneath me like waves
that come one after another
Saltwater trickles down the dune
White-hot
Marrow-hot
I burst

poem 2:

Everyday Motion

Perfection and imperfection
a storytelling favorite
the fable
of yes and no, good and bad

We spin in between
sometimes dominated by one more than the other
the gravitational pull
wants to bury us
the ego wants to move forward

In everyday motion
we attempt to implement perfection
as standard existence, the perfect body
the perfect mind
to hold life at its most everlasting

Dark light in its perfection
Bright light in its perfection
both imperfect to the other

Tonight I feel imperfect
tossing and turning near the surface
of discomfort
because perfection is a con
a phony
a shopkeeper for the misinformed

poem 3:

Imperfection

My head is filled with last night’s dreams
or memories or both
At times I want to forget
that with most opposites
there is a gray line between them

which creates a reason for me
to not believe in anything

If memories and dreams are voiceless
then what is it I’m hearing

In a dream stars rose from the ocean
In the midst of that
a bodiless voice
a mute voice
with memories seeking moments
that had vanished

At times I feel nobody’s home
that my body is soulless
and everything’s a dead dream

and having not fulfilled its life
a dead dream is imperfection
a dog-eared page
that nobody returns to

Along the way
I’ve lost my guardian angel
and between life and death
the gray line expands

Ananya Guha- A Poem

The Little Children In The Streets

It isn't that this awakening is a regression
or a time warp kind of a thing
in history's procession there are protests
and murders as well
they murder words
they murder speech
they murder thoughts which go off a tangent
then they murder murderers
The time that is spent on discourses
are profitable, provided there is rebellion
in speech
in action
in poetry
Poetry composes self, the other, the
past in deep mythic resources
in the mind, its excavations
in the language of body and soul
in slow very slow abstractions
This awakening is a horror
This awakening is mad holocaust
in the nations
in streets
in homes
Gun toting people
in caves
in railway tracks
in the cinema
in airports
in the house, the home
Poetry is one indecent, sinister
truth
in pages
in flutter of the wind
in books dog eared
in the classroom
in grotesque homilies.
The little children in the streets.

Brenton Booth- Two Poems

DOWN BY LOVE

The moon won’t stop
and the shoes crawl
along the floor
music playing but missing
the point
and nothing to bring
the dawn
laying in bed watching
the paint peel from
the walls and trying
not to see her
holding my hands out
to catch
            a new dream
            a new hope
            a new feeling
            a new face—
            anything to take
            the pain away
when she came I
wasn’t much
when she left I
was far less
the sound of hours
and blood filling
the room:
though what I really
need—
couldn’t be further
away.

BEHIND THE CLOSED DOOR

The problem is the stars are average
and overpaid
the honest persons job is underpaid
the walls are never thick enough to
get away from the noise
the problem is the beautiful women
are ugly
the ugly women are beautiful
the men aren’t strong enough for
ugly women
the problem is the cameras are
everywhere
the groceries cost too much
the car won’t take us far enough
away
the problem is the gods are long
dead
the faithful have nothing else but
to continue worshipping them
our true history and future are
unknown
the problem is the great composers
are all gone
the televisions play too much
the individual has been killed by
the censorship of the masses
the problem is the sun doesn’t
always shine
the relationships rarely work
the journalists use their words
to control us
the problem is the hookers charge
too much
the beautiful music never lasts
as long as it should
the oasis is always in the distance
the problem is the taxes aren’t
returned
the success doesn’t make you smile
victory is an idiots dream
on a Tuesday night in Sydney
all the lights off:
well almost.

Sidewalks empty at Twin Lakes

A little past eight
Wife and daughters up cooking
Scent of sage, fresh thyme

Linda M. Crate- Three Poems

phoenix: rebirth

you can have all your pomegranates back
i will never be your persephone
pomegranates have always been too bitter
for me
just like you,
and i promised myself i would not be vulnerable
to your charm but only once;
so you can bite back
those insincere
apologies
no matter how much breath you waste
i won't become your lily
for you could never be my james—
there's only one person you can blame for my absence:
you and you alone
for you drove me away with the fangs of wolves,
and the salt of cruel words pressed
into every open scar
still healing;
you can't have me back for you stole away every star
in my eyes and made me wander in darkness
for many a night—
eventually the moon and stars and sun and flowers
all conspired with birdsong and wolves
to sew me back together, to scatter the parts of you that
wounded me like frightened birds
so they could be devoured
by oblivion;
i reinvented myself from nothing, rose from my ashes
became a phoenix and so no i will not return
to your gilded cage—
come for me and you will burn in the flames
of this chaos i wear so well.

give these moments back

you can keep the pots and pans
just give me these moments
back
they were never yours,
and you can keep the memories;
i don't want to remember
them anymore
just give me my moments back
that's all i ask—
i will find my way out of here
just give me these
moments back,
and i wish i could forget the first time
we kissed
you strangled with the fingers of the narcissist king you are
instead of the white knight you pretend to be;
just give me the moments back
i will recreate a new future
for you see
i am the king of my own kingdom
there's no need for you
in my life
so give me these moments back
because i will not succumb to the bitterness of your
pomegranates—
give me these moments back
or i will use all the fire i've regained and relearned to burn
through you until even there are no ashes left:
give me back these moments
they are mine.

a wild animal

you say you're only human
when you make mistakes,
but you won't forgive mine no matter how
many times i forgive and forgave
you;
so i decided that i will shed these petals
only cut you on a thousand of
my thorns
i don't want your apologies
just want to be left
alone—
everyone tells me that i'm pretty,
but they don't care to see
my naked soul;
and you are the same way because all you
want to do is take from me without
giving any value,
and i have no time to waste on fair weather
friends;
i don't want you so just go away—
don't worry
i've always been a misfit
where the shadows form grins and the moon silver
sings to wolves that is my niche,
and i will glow bright
for any outsider that wishes to join me
because we are strong yet sometimes we get lonely;
but not for the company of people
like you who are always offended or misunderstanding
the things we say
almost as if on purpose—
your gilded cage couldn't interest me if it were the prettiest
thing on earth for i am meant to fly and soar beneath the
clouds
i am a wild animal
you could never cage me.

Mike James- Three Poems

Andy Warhol

The wig got itchy under runway lights. The great thing about a runway is everyone can feel deeply superficial or sexy or feel like a machine which is almost like bliss since a machine feels nothing at all.  Some people forget emotions and never remember them again.  They think that’s ordinary and maybe it is because so many people do that.  Maybe that’s the most ordinary thing.  A plastic cup is ordinary and almost no one notices it.  Look at anything long enough and all the meaning falls away.

Dream With Sinclair Lewis

                                                for Karen Paul Holmes

He drinks straight gin and runs his left hand through his hair.  And he sweats and sweats as if that’s his only job.

The notebook he carried across two continents and at least one state is gone.  Now he is out of ideas.  He’s sure there were still good ideas in his notebook, but he can’t remember where he left it.

This is awful, he says.  Awful, awful, awful, awful.  Then he looks at me and cocks his head and takes that left hand down from his hair.

And why couldn’t you at least be a pretty blonde, he asks.

I know, I say.  I’ve asked my father the same thing.

Karl Marx

Beards are the fashion or they are not.  A long beard equals commitment.  It is like lifelong smoking without the cough.  Beards grow and grow and mostly turn grey if they last long enough.  There are theories about where the best whiskers are made. If the air is better for them in England, Paris, Belgium or Germany.  To go through all the theories would take commitment and many years.
