Douglas Polk- Three Poems

A Question

life and I,
hitchhiking in this body,
through space and time,
life has said,
with this body's last breath,
it plans to leave,
but I wonder,
will it offer to take me along,
or must I remain,
and stay behind,
the question troubling,
the answer unknown,
uneasy traveling companions,
life and I.

Swag

truth,
a child swaddled,
warm and secure,
protected from the elements,
hopefully to grow strong,
and powerful,
but becomes malformed if the blankets not undone,
unhealthy,
no longer true,
only a manipulation,
truth,
property of the protectors,
shaped and misused,
for their own use,
grotesque now,
the baby once beautiful,
swaddled in blankets,
warm and secure.

Politics 2015

no rules today,
you can lie,
you can cheat,
precedents no longer exist,
constitutional relationships,
ignored and abused,
the executive and legislative branches go their own ways,
justice only a tool,
they can twist or shape,
data and numbers,
created by every side,
stories told to hide the lies,
politics a cesspool of human waste,
galloping to the brim of extinction,
the human race,
power held by the greedy,
corrupt and vain,
no rules today,
enjoy the pain.

Richard Schnap- A Poem

HUMAN CONDITION

I have known men
Blessed with unique genius
That ended up driving a cab

And I have known men
Born to be great virtuosos
Begging passersby for change

And I have known men
With talent to rival the masters
Posting signs to sell their belongings

And I have known men
With minds possessing great wisdom
That wound up talking to the wind

And I have known men
That set out to save the world
But could not save their own souls

And I have known men
That buried their faces in shadows
To try to hide from themselves

Linda M. Crate- Three Poems

dreaming of better tomorrows

i'm a girl of many endings
don't know which
one is meant for me,
and i wish i could find this
prince
who is supposed to help me but
i only end up kissing frogs;
surely there is someone that understands
the madness of my soul,
and someone whose dreams i can
nuture and who will nuture
mine;
or is my heart too heavy to carry
for anyone
i've never seen the beauty of scars more than i
do now
because they show our failures in our journey
that could not kill us
emotionally or physically or spiritually
or all three combined—
someone save me from these seas of introspection
i am love sick,
and there are so many kissing couples
fondly dancing around me;
i am happy for them but there is a twinge of
jealousy that feeling of what about me?
as i sit here forgotten
dreaming of better tomorrows.

one day

once you called me your
little lotus flower,
but i'm tired of kissing frogs;
i came close to
kissing another one,
why would you make a mockery of
me?
don't you know there is power
to our words?
call me your lily of the valley
or your thorned rose,
but don't promise me a lifetime of
kissing frogs in ponds;
i want to meet my forever and i want
him to meet me,
and i don't think we're going to meet
in a pond and if we do i'll
eat these words;
but give me a crown of flowers
let me dance in the fields and meadows
with fae and faun
and explore the night with vampyre and werewolf
kiss the stars and the rivers and the trees
with nymphs and satyrs—
one day on one of my adventures of wildness and
whimsy there will be a man whose eyes won't
let me escape no matter how hard i run,
and he'll only have to call my
name and i'll be his;
and together we will be one achieving our dreams
together and apart.

give me a lover

with long hair that loves to dance and who
kisses danger with a welcome smile
whose eyes will burn me
so i must rise from my ashes again,
and let him be the one
that saves me
from my own self-destruction;
the only one that can make me snap out of
whimsy and wilderness should there
be occasion that i should—
give me a lover
who understands my soul and whose soul
i can commune with openly
even if words are never shed because sometimes
silences are the deepest words of all,
and let him love me for him and i for him
let no ocean part us—
give me a lover that is handsome not only in looks
but in his soul
who can tell me when i'm wrong without
offending me,
and who i can respond to in the same manner;
give me a lover that loves to sing
whose songs will awaken in me dreams long forgotten
so i can remember who i'm supposed to be
and who recalls me even when i can't remember
myself so that i'm never left alone—
give me a lover with a sense of humor so i can always
laugh even when darkness dances in like a cloud,
whose strong shoulders who can hold
me when the tears fall
and whose weakness can allow me the strength
to love him all the more;
let us love as no one has ever loved and no one
will ever love again
my heart is a passionate thing that scares the hell out of me
let him be just as passionate about things that matter
and let him tame the insanity of this tempest
inside i cannot stop,
and give me a lover who i can love
so we can save one another
when the world around us crashes and burns whose bones
are strong enough to house my dreams and mine his,
and let this lover be the last one; the one to claim me forever as
his own.

Jason D. DeHart- A Poem

Open Concept

They say the room
is open concept.
Just like they talk about
some people.
We have a two-party system,
at least, and multitudes
of religious views.
Some spit vitriol, some
spill kindness, some yet
rest in the corner, a vase,
an empty shelf waiting to be filled.
They love who they love,
act how they act,
eschewing judgment and knowing
how eyes rove and analyze,
how words can be like stones,
and how much it all really matters
in the end.

Robert F. Gross- Three Poems

In Order of Appearance

morning happens somewhere inside you
don’t configure the adjacent night at all
morning happens you are not fully wrested
you are not pressed or washed or caffeinated

morning takes shape as an unintended bright
you pull the blinds to keep the darkness in
morning catches you un-breathed and un-stretched
you are not dressed or deft or delegated

morning happens as a staggered headache
you pull the sheets and expose your shadow
morning wobbles you on naked feet upright
toward the hallway the razor the enemy outside

Renfield

How we have felt left in an alley from what we know
and do not know since coming here
we therefore seem to be plunked down
seem perturbed from know and do not know

what in this bourgeois figure blandly watching
one another in this neighborhood where names
of flowers and serenades are unknown to us clouds burn
off before lunch and the blandly watching begins

I cannot believe me in any vampire’s arms
limp and scrawny liminal and unshaven
cannot believe me surrendered off the pavement
swept off my unbelief and waxen stance

Into the post-midnight of this ishmael city
spidered and sucked into burned-out veins
infused with insectivorous impulses me
impersonal unassigned and vacant lusts

Ascending the fire escape into belief
in the small things that sustain us always
houseflies and fireflies memory fragments
no bigger than fleas stuck between my teeth

Strip

Got to admit it: your cloak of invisibility is wearing thin.
Wearing from inside out, musty with stale renunciations.
A moth-eaten intermittent flea-market spectacle of yourself,
A wannabe bargain-basement vampire, shredded into recognition.

Everyone glimpses: obscene filaments of you wavering and gaping
Between broken threads like you still know how to want familiar things:
The caress of a lit cigar, penetration by somebody else’s lack or
Lackluster ambitions, the routine kisses of approval and habitual need.

Time to pack your bags and head out to where it’s carved from bone-tired.
Cliffs made of abandoned earrings, autographs, and siren’s cauls.
Transparent with sea sounds and dolphin do-wop cast in glassy pitch.
Glowing with pure indifference. Antiseptic. Astringent. Beside the point.

You can let your hapless robe drop to your ankles in visible exhaustion.
No one will take notice of your aged nakedness, your grey exhalations.
Step into the tidal pool, Aphrodite in reverse—sag, dissolve, cut loose.
You’ll work out the details later. ‘Cause that’s what later’s for.

Bio: As 2015 begins, Robert F. Gross, writer, director, and performer, is still unsettled, in every sense of the word. He is preparing for the premiere of Extinction Thoughts in Philadelphia with Julius Ferraro in February. Paul Tristram- Three Poems

She’s Shotting Again

In and out of bovver, razor taxing’s and strife.
Back lane traipsing the arse-end of the High Street.
Hoody up, tweaking and on a mission, completely.
Swallowing down another nervous-eyed gulp
of panic and determination.
Fluid and rattling like a regurgitated castanet.
Itching like an abscess and sweating
like the heavy ceiling of a police cell.
She swerves the rubbish binned corner, neurotically
out of the view of CCTV cameras,
up the tooth filling, shaking fire escape
to jaded sanctuary, counting greasy money
down the gang-graffitied, prostitute-ridden hallway.

A Punch Settled Him

“Hey, that guy over there in the corner
is sleeping sitting upright
and dribbling into his own lap.
I though you didn’t allow people in here
that drunk, I feel cheated?”

“Don’t be so soft, it’s not like that.
He’s a stranger, here with the travelling fair.
He was alright for a couple of hours
drinking with everyone, we all quite liked him,
swears like a trooper but really funny
in a rough around the edges kind of way.
That is, until Tommy Glassjaw came in
offering him a Black Sambuca drinking challenge.
They both did 10 each, straight down
and then started brawling, matey pulled a knife
and I had to punch him in the back of the head
with my antique clothes ‘sad iron’ to quiet him.
We’re waiting for him to awake, to check he’s ok?
Hoping that he remembers nowt at all,
tell him he fell over and give him a free beer
before closing up for the night and calling it a day.
Or he’ll be back ‘round here with those fair people,
with their hatchets, machetes and meat cleavers
and we certainly don’t want that now, do we?”

The Voyage Of The Voyeur

Up the well-worn, rickety old attic stepladder
deep into the darkened cobwebbed depths
of his decrepit, perverted, sickening lust.
Resting momentarily to eyesight adjust,
then scurrying onwards to the left-
like a disgusting sexually aroused rat-
along the carefully laid stolen scaffolding planks,
straight as the crow would fly if so inclined.
Through the first of the 18 holes he has burrowed
through the partitioning and unthought-of walls
of this unsuspecting roof topped terraced street.
Yet, he does not even flinch or think to spider-off
to look through the 5 peepholes of No.2
which he is just, at this moment,  trespassing over,
besides it was Sharon’s turn twice last month.
Nor, does he pay any mind to the next 15 properties
that he rapidly and easily tight-ropes across.
No, he is focused in his unpleasant shenanigans
and has only young Mary living at No. 18 squirming
pornographically through his rancid, repulsive mind.
He saw her with a group of collage friends
out buying new underwear in Marks & Sparks
this very morning, he could smell and almost
taste them individually as he slimily walked on by.
Upon finally reaching his discrete destination
he manoeuvres himself over to the bathroom hole,
uncorks it with trained fingers and dribbling lips.
Carefully takes the small indecent rucksack
containing a cushion, sandwiches, porn mags
a flask of Bovril and two dirty yet washable rags
from off his twisted, lizard-like, evil back.
Silently and mischievously chuckles, wickedly
rubbing his bony, wrinkled, calloused hands.
He makes himself as comfortable as he can do
and perched like a vulture up to no good, he awaits.

Yuan Changming- Three Poems

Bodily Movement

Every body on earth is moving, changing
So is every body else within the whole
Cosmos, even the cosmos itself

Except the vast night sky
That remains still in the eye

Seasonal Greetings: for Liu Yu

Rather than composing poetry
To commemorate you after you are gone
I am now writing, dear Mom
To pay my highest tribute to you
As one of the hardest-fated on earth

Yes, among the many death experiences you’ve had
The most significant one for me (and my sons)
Was your sickness you suffered at two, which was so
Severe that your poor and ignorant foster mother
Could do nothing but put you on a flat basket
And return your living corpse to your bio-creator

But for your step father, who used his shamanic skills
To contain the evil spirit and drive it to an unknown
Corner, you would have died like a doomed sapling
(That’s why your name is changed to ‘Refound’)

So, stay well, Mom, and remain hardy for us!

.

You are just a tiny pinpointing dot
But you can pin an end onto
Anything, anybody, even the entire cosmos

From the strongest statement
In the most powerful discourse
To the weakest form
Of the representation of life

A solid full stop
A minimal black hole

Michael Keshigian- Three Poems

BIRTHDAY BALLOONS

There are creatures in the sea
known as balloon fish
of which I know very little,
although they sound
like rather amusing entities,
self inflating ornaments,
ideal for your birthday gathering,
wiggling in the four corners of the room
each in its own ample aquarium,
expanding proportions
every time one of your guests
approaches the sea salted transparency,
staring with fascination and delight
after you have blown out
the candles on your cake.
I would likely have to dive for them, though,
in the tropical Galapagos waters
or similar equatorial climes,
searching the shallow coral reefs
or mangrove areas
to delicately capture a few by surprise
lest they swim away in a huff,
angry at my intentions,
although I’d promise to return them
to their warm water flats
once you’ve unwrapped your gifts
and sipped the glass of wine
into which the evening tumbles.

SET-UP GUY

As soon as he boarded the train,
as soon as it departed
from the grand central terminal,
he began to doubt the city’s existence
and his interaction within,
attempting desperately to remember
minute details of noisy streets
filled with enigmatic crowds,
crowds that eventually swarmed
midnight music cafes
and underground poetry slams
for release and relaxation.
It was the end of the working day,
offices were closing as he stared
from the train’s sooty window,
watching skyscraper lights dim
while the mountainous concrete contour
shrank slowly against the horizon,
spotting the darkening sky
with artificial constellations.
A lovely young woman,
sitting next to him,
leaned over and into his arm,
joined his gaze at the speckled skyline.
“There it is,” he mumbled,
pointing as if she could see,
“the rooftop I called home,
those crimson shingles on the right.”
He sighed.  His destination, re-employment,
and new abode are yet to exist.
People unknown are slowly preparing,
anticipating his arrival
to another set of streets and crowds
that will blend and blur this current memory
upon his next departure.

HEAD IN THE CLOUDS

At least once a year,
on a clear, crisp Spring morning,
he hikes with a colorful backpack,
most of the 6,200 feet
of a Mt. Washington trail,
dodging boulders and brush
to find a clearing
where he can spend most of the day
counting clouds that parade the blue dome
northward, whisking the peak.
With any luck and to carry on comfortably,
he might locate a rather sturdy white pine
climb a muscular limb
and build a nest
upon adjoining branches
with the gear he packed,
just in case,
then lay back and stare upward
with pencil and pad in hand
to connote quantity and types,
odd formations and densities.
Most friends might think him foolish
and he somewhat agrees,
being half crazy with the abundance
and wonder of it all,
delicious moments of quiet
interrupted only by whispers
amid the leaves
or the occasional crow’s caw
which awakens him
from the hypnotic state clouds invoke
as he realizes the dilemma
within his purpose,
a complete and utter fascination
with timelessness.

Ralph Monday- Three Poems

Narcissus and Orpheus Hangout

An unlikely pair to become confidants,
a songbird, self-lover in reflected
                                                water.

For the modern age they are like gamblers
in a casino spinning the slot machine
                                                for

lady luck to appear in swishing skirt
and pearl necklace. They would prefer
                                                the

smoke-filled barroom, any vacuumed
mask to hide behind, for that is their
                                                nature,

one of underworld moments continually
running from the milk-filled sun.
                                                Here

they sit having a little wine, a good smoke,
reminiscence about presenting garlands
                                                of

roses, sweetmeats to all the pouty-lipped
things that they entranced
                                                when

they lived in the light like two geese
fluffing feathers before the long migration
                                                south.

Narcissus knows they are not so different,
like twin contrails following a plane
                                                toward

an inevitable destination. He says,
if we could get above ground one more
                                                time

you would be like Sting or Jagger playing
the gig and oh how the groupies would
                                                flock

to the show. You would be a god, man,
and use your head in more ways than
                                                one.

But why would I do this? I love only
one woman that the gods decree cannot
be mine.

Illusion. That which is dead is dead.
You can never go back to that which never
                                                was.

For me, I seek only the hunt and those
who can find no reason not to eat from a
                                                forbidden tree.

Narcissus Revisited

This, boys and girls, is a tale about
Narcissus. A broader spectrum, bigger
brush, revisionist history put out like a
child’s tale, easy to understand and sweet
dreams.

So here’s the tale kiddos. Once
upon a time the most beautiful
lad in all existence (in his mind)
was forest wandering in just a
rap funk.

He was lonely,
he was depressed,
he was sad—he had

no Facebook page for others to
marvel at his perfection,
no mate,
for no lass could match
his beauty.

He knew he should be a politician,
president even,
movie star,
or a rocker

like Leo Mick—destiny to be adored,
admired, looked up to, maybe even
get a doll named after him.

Thirsty and miserable as a guy who
threw away the winning lottery
ticket, he stooped to drink from a pristine
pool.

And lo! like the angels’ epiphany
at Christmas time, like a blue-light
special firing up the show, like a
virgin about to be deflowered,
as Narcissus bent to drink

what he saw peering back freaked
him out like the clown on America Horror
Freak Show.

Disfigured.
Distorted.
Skin burned and

crinkled like a
70 year old beach babe
who didn’t use high enough
SPF, a hunchback like
some comic figure in
Monty Python—oh
the horror the horror cried
Marlow, this heart of darkness
cannot be.

A wise man who looks like
Yoda comes hobbling along,
takes one look at poor Narcissus,
tells him that it will take a hell
of a lot of therapy to fix this—the
dark side of the force is strong,
but maybe some good night cream
would help.

Brews up postmodern potion,
new age dream.

Not what Narc baby wanted to
hear. He called on Castaneda
who used a bit of peyote to go
into the inner realm who called
up don Juan Matus from that
place where time and space
have no significance.

The Yaqui sorcery said I can sorta
fix this, but here’s the deal:
You go to sleep and when you
wake up everything will be cool
as a cucumber on a hot summer day.

But, nothing lasts forever, and if
some of the old seeps through to
others, little by little my spell will
wear off.

Cool, said Narc, and slept.
don Juan brewed up a juice
worthy of MacBeth, poured it
all over the sleeper like slathering
honey on toast.

The next morning at the pool
Narc gazes in. Staring back is a
face as beautiful as a swan, a turtledove,
a bird in both hands.

He is happy.
He is ecstatic.
He is in love, baby.

Just wait till the world sees him now.
He’ll own every babe around as easy
as putting pennies in a piggy bank.

Hits the nostalgia bars, disco scene
first. Dancing away like John Travolta
until one girl says what’s wrong with your
ear?

Nothing nothing I am perfect!

Grooves on the lounge lizard scene
taking in that sultry music until
the waitress says what’s wrong with your
nose?

Nothing nothing I am sublime!

Tries a vintage 1940s bar where a tribute
group plays the Andrews Sisters.
What’s wrong with your face?

Nothing nothing I am loved by all!

He goes home and stares in the mirror.
His face is peeling away like the
emperor without his clothes,

Mama mama! he cries. This cannot
be. I am the most beautiful of all.
He has no fairy godmother to call upon,
his supply has abandoned him.

Deep in the forest the wicked
witch smiles at his misfortune,
stares into her mirror and says,
mirror mirror on the wall,
who is the fairest of them all?

The Narcissist

This is what they do, in old buildings
quilted by dirt, or in the nitroglycerine
heat of a pounding bar, at home or
abroad, in manic moments of complete
wrong electrical wiring, the target
honed as sharp flint, seen as the Prince
or Princess flickering by on the movie
screen behind their eyes that is their life,
you become the gold to crack their dross,
you are the perfect rock to steady their void.

She will say—there is a field that I know, a
perfect arena out beyond right and wrong
that only the special can know.
                                    I’ll meet you there.

But the garden is full of sharp stones
painful to walk upon. If you bleed a bit
at first you don’t notice, entranced by the gilded
canopy weaved all about. When she bends at the
pool to gaze at her reflection emptiness
stares back. She turns to you and smiles, a world
without empathy, Germany in World War II.
She would like for her scar tissue to be cut away,
but knows not the disease.

She will say—I am never nurtured enough.
That field is only for me
                                    not for you.

Always always the victim, the outcast, tattered
scarecrow on the edge of the field, abandoned
to birds, to air, to earth and dirt, the way that
you will be abandoned, devalued like an old
doll, a shipwreck moldy and sea-grown on
artic bottoms.

She will think—one apple from the basket is never
enough. I must eat my fill of all that is desired
for this is what I deserve.

Fictions are transparent glass fables told
in looking for the reflected image that never
materializes—Aesop race toward her Zeno mind
that Achilles can never win for beguiled
witchery is complete.

She will think—this pet has been groomed too long.
Reality is what I feel, what roses that I make, and now
the Prince goes back into the pond as a frog.

As Dante’s centaurs, she races away, behind a river of
boiling blood. There are many arrows left in in this
false Diana’s quiver.
Many targets in the field.
